We’ve been keeping busy over the last few months with our Life After Rugby programme (LAR), with several current and ex-players benefitting from our members’ expertise and willingness to help.
For those unsure as to how we fit into the jigsaw of player support, I’ll clarify a few things. We are not the Rugby Players Association (RPA), who are funded by and have a duty of care to all professional players and we work with the RPA rather than trying to replicate what they do.
Our aim is to help players, who possess a passion for business and the relevant skills, find suitable roles in sympathetic businesses who are linked to the RBN. Unlike the RPA, we are not well equipped to deal with players who have no idea what to do, though we would of course help as much as possible if approached.
Many of the positive qualities attributed to rugby players ring true, but, over and above that, the game is still awash with individuals who have pursued experiences and qualifications outside of the game that further boost their value to businesses.
The journey for players wanting to be placed by our LAR programme is one aimed at finding them roles ideal for both them and the employer, rather than simply give them a non-specific taste of the business world.
After long discussions with our in-house team, players are thoroughly assessed by Thomas International, ensuring any placements we seek to make will be realistic and beneficial to both parties.
Recently we have placed Wasps’ Tom Lindsay with property specialists who work with Tesco’s property arm (read more here) and Bristol’s Charlie Amesbury.
Charlie, currently qualifying as a Chartered Financial Analyst, received some expert CV coaching from Nick Baxter at Planet Forward before being placed with financial experts Brewin Dolphin. A detailed report on how Charlie got on will feature on the site in the next few weeks.
We are also working with ex-Bath prop David Barnes, USA Sevens coach Mike Friday and London Welsh’s Tom May and we have capacity to help many more.
